Flashback

On this date in 1980 I was out birding at Pipers Vale and observed c350 Tree Sparrows.

We can thank intensive farming practices for the decline of many bird populations.

  1. And i can remember winter flocks of Redpolls and Siskins around the jetty area of Pipers Vale or as we know it... the Layers, not to mention the Yellowhammers around Pond Hall Farm right upto the bunkers and gliderfield (now Ravenswood and Braziers wood ).... not all birds were lost to farming but also to the building industry.... this land will never be reclaimed.

Remember the Sand Martins at Levington quarry !....... gone too, well pretty much so.

Nice site Mick, keep up the good work.

    Regards
    Parrish
